Research description

You are invited to participate in this research study. The aim of this research study is to collect information about the personal travel behaviour of residents in all metropolitan areas across Australia using a location-aware mobile application, emTripLog.

Information about people’s day-to-day travel behaviour is critical to predict future travel demand and infrastructure needs. This information is even more important during a rare event such as the current virus pandemic for our cities to be better planned for the most vulnerable people in our society, when the next pandemic comes.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I have some issue with the app

First thing to do is to check that your phone is connected to the internet. If you're already connected, consider relaunching the app. If none of the above helps, please see find your issue in the FAQ section or contact our support person at a.siripanich@unsw.edu.au.

I have an installation issue, who can I contact?

I don't see any nofications from emTripLog

If you do not see any notifications from emTripLog, please make sure that emTripLog has the permission to show you notifications. See this guide if you are not sure how to turn on notification for an application on your smartphone.

emTripLog doesn't seem to be recording my trips

You may need to check the location permision has been set correctly on your phone.

For iOS devices: go to Setting > emTripLog > Location > select Always.

For Android devices location setting may appear differently depending on which phone you use. Go to Setting > Location > emTripLog > select Allow all the time.

The app seems to be stuck at loading

First thing to do is to check that your phone is connected to the internet. If you're already connection, sometimes relaunching the app may resolves the issue.

The calendar on emTripLog is stuck in the past

If you cannot select today date on the calendar, relaunching the app also helps.

Why some trips in the 'Diary' tab don't have an 'Add Trip Details' button?

emTripLog sends your raw trip data to a cloud server to be processed everyday at 8.00pm. So when you see a trip that appears in a green box it means that that trip has not been processed. Once the trip is processed its box will appear in white color with an 'Add Trip Details' button.

Why Gmail?

The emTripLog application requires a Gmail account for log-in. If you are not comfortable using your Gmail account, you can create a new account just for this study.

What are the assumptions used in the total estimated time spent?

Assuming that you complete an average of 4 trips per day, it is expected that participation in this research study will not consume more than 16 minutes of your time during 4 days of use (excluding the time spent in the user profile and post-experience questionnaires).

I would like to have all my data detroyed?

You are the owner of your data. If you decide that you no longer want to be part of this study please contact the research team at rashidi@unsw.edu.au to have you data destroy from our database within 1 month of joining the study. Once your data have been anonymised, we will not be able to remove your data since we won't have any record of which data points belong to you. This is to make sure that identities of our participants will never be exposed.

Who will have access to my data?

All data collected from this study will be kept in a highly secured UNSW server at the RCITI lab and will be confidentialised to prevent your identity being exposed. The data will be strictly accessible only by the research team.

How will my data be confidentialised?

The only way we can identify you is via the email you used to sign up with us. Once the study is over, we will decouple your data with your email, by removing your email from our database, to make sure your identity will be anonymised.
